Cataract is the opacity of the crystalline lens of the eye, which leads to poor visual acuity and needs to be removed when it negatively affects vision, with the implantation of a soft lens inside the eye to improve vision.
I was told to leave the cataract until it hardens : is this true?
Definitely incorrect. Leaving cataract until its advanced stages causes a severe decline in vision and can result in severe problems including high intraocular pressure (double glaucoma) that has died on the optic nerve With the development of cataract removal surgeries, it has become easy to remove by ultrasound (phaco) and laser (femtocataract) and there is no need to be patient with it until it is ossified to remove it surgically.
Is Cataract dangerous and what would happens if neglected?
The presence of cataracts in itself is not dangerous because it is a sign of aging. Sometimes, when neglected, cataracts cause complications such as uveitis, high intraocular pressure (glaucoma), after which treatment becomes urgent. Therefore, we advise everyone to see a doctor when you do not feel comfortable with vision.
How is cataract removed??
Cataract removal operations are constantly evolving. From surgical removal to ultrasonic removal (phacoemulsification) and the use of femtosecond laser to facilitate removal.
1st entry to eye is done through fine wounds not exceeding 2.5 millimeters through which the lens of the eye is opened, emulsified and removed from the inside of the eye.
Then the new soft lens is implanted (injected) from the same small opening in the cornea and then clean the eye and in most cases we do not need to put any sutures in the wounds that heal quickly
What is Phacoemulsification????
Phacoemulsification is a cataract removal by ultrasonic and is the approved technique for cleaning the eye from cataract. A cataract fragmentation device is used by ultrasound from a very small wound of about 2 mm only to emulsify the lens and then suction it from the eye, then the new lens is implanted in the same place as the lens that was removed.
What is Femtocataract???
It is the most advanced technique for removing cataract, as the femtosecond laser device takes over the work of all the wounds of the operation, as well as correcting part of the existing astigmatism and making the external opening of the lens of the eye, which ensures the stability of the lens implanted inside the lens capsule after the operation.
When does the vision settle after the operation and when can I see clearly??
Usually, vision gradually improves after the operation, and manytimes it improves rapidly
When can I practice my sports normally after the operation???
A week after the operation you can resume most of your public activities. After a month you can swim and exercise
What is the differences between intraocular lenses used in surgery??
Modern technology offers several options for lens implantation. Some of them reduce visual aberration, some of them treat astigmatism with the process, and some of them are multifocal. We will tell you about the different lenses and the options between them
What are the instructions before cataract removal surgery??
The patient must be fasting
Remember to take your hypertension treatments on the morning of the operation
Follow the anesthesiologist’s instructions
Blood tests are brought to the anesthesiologist
Sleep well
What are the instructions after cataract removal??
Do Not rub the eye
Do Not exercise vigorously for a week
Do Not lift heavy objects for a week
Do Not bend, bowing or prostrating for a week
Sleep on the face or other side
Make sure that water does not reach the eye for a week
Does cataract return after being removed??
Definitely, cataract Dose NOT return after its removal, because we have removed the lens of the eye (which makes up cataract) in the first operation.
Sometimes opacities occur on the lens capsule (about 20%) and you need one laser session in a lifetime to polish the lens. The laser session is done in the clinic and not the operations and takes less than one minute after that you will enjoy your sight all your life God willing
Will I need to wear glasses after the operation??
Visual acuity generally improves after cataract removal
You will need to make glasses for reading and office work and glasses to treat visual impairment such as astigmatism
