Pediatric Glaucoma (Congenital Glaucoma)

Care begins from the very first moment.

Pediatric Glaucoma: Rare but Serious

Pediatric glaucoma is a rare yet serious condition that affects the eye during the first months or years of a child’s life. It causes abnormally high intraocular pressure, which can damage the optic nerve and threaten vision if not detected and treated early.

At Dr. Hesham Gharieb’s Clinic, we place utmost importance on the precise diagnosis and treatment of this type of glaucoma. It requires specialized care, extensive expertise, and advanced equipment tailored to the delicate nature of children’s eyes.

What Is Pediatric Glaucoma?

Pediatric glaucoma is a condition in which the drainage of fluid inside the eye (aqueous humor) is impaired, leading to fluid buildup and increased intraocular pressure. If this pressure is not treated, it may damage the optic nerve and result in permanent vision loss.

It can be congenital (present at birth) or develop during the first few months or years of life.

Symptoms That Should Never Be Ignored:

If parents notice any of these signs, they should immediately consult a pediatric ophthalmologist.

How is it diagnosed?
At Dr. Hesham Gharieb’s Clinic, diagnosis is performed using:

Treatment: High Precision… and Great Hope

Surgical treatment is often the primary solution for pediatric glaucoma, as medications alone may not be sufficient. Surgical procedures include:

Ab Interno Approach

To open the blocked drainage pathways inside the eye and allow fluid to drain.

External drainage surgery

To create a new outlet that allows fluid drainage and reduces intraocular pressure.

Drainage valve implantation

In cases that do not respond to conventional surgeries.

The most appropriate technique is selected based on each child’s condition, and all aim to preserve the optic nerve and prevent lifelong vision deterioration.

A Real Case and an Inspiring Success

In a powerful example of the importance of early intervention, Dr. Hesham Gharieb successfully performed surgery on a 7-month-old infant suffering from severe congenital glaucoma.

The child showed classic symptoms such as persistent tearing and an abnormally large eye. After thorough diagnosis, a delicate procedure was performed to open the drainage channels and reduce intraocular pressure.

By the grace of God, the optic nerve was preserved, and the child’s vision gradually improved—thanks to prompt diagnosis and Dr. Gharib’s advanced surgical expertise.
